About this treatment

Laser tattoo removal uses highly concentrated pulses of light energy to break down the ink particles in your skin. Your immune system then naturally flushes them away over the following weeks, gradually fading the tattoo with each session.

At SOMA, we treat all tattoo sizes — from fine line micro tattoos to large multi-colour pieces — with a precise, considered approach. Whether you want complete removal or fading for a cover-up, we'll tailor the treatment plan to your tattoo and your skin.

What We Can Treat

Our laser technology is effective on black, grey, and coloured inks across all skin tones. We treat body tattoos of all sizes as well as brow tattoos, cosmetic tattoos, and unwanted permanent makeup.

The number of sessions required depends on the tattoo's age, size, ink colour, depth, and your skin type. Older tattoos with less ink typically respond faster. A consultation is always required before treatment begins.

THE SOMA APPROACH

Every tattoo removal journey starts with an honest conversation. We assess your tattoo, give you a realistic picture of what's achievable and how many sessions it will take, and build a treatment plan around your goals — whether that's full removal or preparing skin for a cover-up.

What to Expect

1

Consultation

We assess your tattoo — size, colour, age, ink density, and skin type. We give you an honest estimate of the number of sessions and the expected result. A patch test may be carried out before your first treatment.

2

Treatment

The laser delivers short pulses of light energy to the tattooed area. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. A cooling device is used throughout to keep you comfortable.

3

Immediately after

The area will look red and may feel tender — similar to mild sunburn. This settles within a few hours. A soothing dressing is applied before you leave. Avoid sun exposure and keep the area clean and moisturised.

4

Between sessions

Your immune system gradually breaks down the fragmented ink over 6–8 weeks. The tattoo will continue to fade between appointments. Sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart to allow full healing and maximum fading.

Common Questions

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. It's uncomfortable rather than painful, and the pulses are very brief. A cooling device is used throughout every session to minimise discomfort.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the tattoo's age, size, ink colour, depth, and your skin type. Most tattoos require between 4 and 10 sessions for significant fading or full removal. We'll give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.
Can all tattoo colours be removed?
Black and dark inks respond fastest as they absorb all laser wavelengths. Coloured inks — particularly greens, yellows, and light blues — can be more resistant and may require additional sessions. We'll assess your specific tattoo at consultation.
Will there be scarring?
Scarring is very rare with modern laser technology when treatments are spaced correctly and aftercare is followed. If the original tattoo caused scarring, that may remain after removal. We'll discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.
Can I have removal to prepare for a cover-up?
Absolutely. Fading a tattoo with laser before a cover-up gives your tattoo artist much more freedom with design and colour. We often work alongside tattoo artists to fade to exactly the right level — you don't always need full removal for a successful cover-up.
What aftercare do I need to follow?
Keep the area clean and moisturised, avoid sun exposure, and don't pick any scabbing that may form. Avoid swimming, saunas, and intense exercise for 48 hours. Full aftercare instructions are provided at every appointment.

After Care

Post Treatment Expectations

Following your laser tattoo removal session, it is normal to experience some temporary skin responses as the body begins breaking down the ink particles. You may notice:

Common & Expected Reactions

  • Redness and warmth in the treated area
  • Mild swelling
  • Frosting (a temporary white haze that fades within minutes to a few hours)
  • Sensitivity or tenderness
  • Mild blistering (not always, and usually small)
  • Itchiness during the healing phase
  • Scabbing or flaking as the skin repairs

These responses are normal and typically settle within a few days. Blistering and scabbing are part of the natural healing process and show that your body is responding to the treatment.

After Care

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure safe healing and effective fading of the tattoo.

For the First 24–48 Hours

  • Keep the treated area clean and dry.
  • Apply a cooling pack wrapped in a clean cloth to reduce heat and swelling.
  • Do not pick, rub, or scratch the area, even if blistering occurs.
  • If dressing was applied, keep it in place for the time recommended by your practitioner.

Blistering & Scabbing

  • Blisters may appear within 8–12 hours. Do not pop them.
  • If a blister breaks on its own, gently cleanse with mild soap and water, and apply a sterile non-stick dressing.
  • Do not pick scabs—allow them to fall off naturally to avoid scarring.

Skincare Products

  • Apply a thin layer of aftercare balm or a recommended healing ointment once or twice daily.
  • Avoid harsh products, scrubs, acids, retinoids, or fragranced skincare on the area for at least 7 days.
  • Avoid makeup on the area until fully healed.

Heat, Sweat & Friction

For 48–72 hours, avoid:

  • Hot baths, saunas, steam rooms
  • Swimming pools or the sea
  • Heavy exercise or sweating
  • Tight clothing rubbing against the area

Sun Protection

Sun care is critical during laser tattoo removal.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area until it is fully healed.
  • Once healed, apply SPF 50 daily between sessions.
  • Do not use tanning beds at any stage of the removal process.

Infection Prevention

Contact the clinic if you notice:

  • Excessive or worsening redness
  • Pus, unusual discharge, or strong odour
  • Increasing pain after 48 hours

These may be signs of infection and require prompt attention.

Between Sessions

  • Treatments are usually spaced 6–8 weeks apart to allow the body to process the ink safely.
  • Fading continues gradually during this period.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle—your immune system plays a key role in ink clearance.
